JUSTICE
In 2005, the wealthiest 20% of the world accounted for 76.6% of total private consumption, while the poorest 20% consumed just 1.5%; 12 percent of the world’s population uses 85 percent of its water, and none of the 12 percent lives in developing countries. For every $1 in aid a developing country receives, over $25 is spent on debt repayment.
Justice is a concept of impartiality and equity, against inequality and exploitation. Justice takes into account the inalienable and inborn rights of all human beings and citizens, the right of all people and individuals to equal protection before the law of their civil rights, without discrimination on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, color, ethnicity, religion, disability, age, or other characteristics.
Justice flows from God’s heart and character. The Hebrew word for “justice,” mishpat, occurs in its various forms in the Hebrew Old Testament. Its most basic meaning is to treat people equitably. Mishpat is giving people what they are due, whether punishment, protection or care.
Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the Lord your God is giving you.(Deuteronomy 16:20)
